Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work in August only?
No, the pre-arranged courses are the only options available.
Why do I have to stay until October?
Generally most harvest seasons run from late August to late October. As this is the most important time of the year for the farm, we do ask all our pickers to commit to stay until, at least, the beginning of October, to ensure that the majority of our crops are harvested.
Will I be able to work after the course finishes?
Yes, as we still have later crops, such as Braeburn and Jazz to be picked.
I would like to apply with my friend/partner, is this possible?
Yes, it is possible, but you must tell us when you apply.
When do I need to arrive?
Ideally you should aim to arrive a couple of days before the course start date, to settle into your accommodation and get to know your surroundings before starting work.
What happens when I arrive in the UK?
When you arrive in the UK, you will need to find your own way to the farm - directions of how to reach the farm can be found on our 'how to get to Broadwater Farm' webpage. Some useful websites with up-to-date coach and train information include www.nationalexpress.com and www.nationalrail.co.uk.
Can I drive my car to the farm?
It may be possible, but you must tell us when you apply.
Will I be greeted by anyone on arrival?
Yes, if we are expecting your arrival, we will arrange for someone to be on site to meet you and show you around. If this is not possible, we will contact you and let you know beforehand.
What things do I need to bring?
You will find a checklist on this website, which gives you an idea on what items to pack and also what documents you will need to bring. Essential items include a sleeping bag, waterproof clothing and sturdy waterproof footwear.
Do I need to bring any British money with me?
Yes, it is important that you bring a minimum of £100 cash with you. This will pay for travel to the farm and your living expenses until your first pay day, usually one week after you start work. The money will also cover you in the event that you are not able to start work as early as anticipated.
Can I bring a laptop?
The farm now has wifi, so you can bring a laptop computer with you. There are also computers available for those who do not own a laptop and the local library also provides internet access.
Will I be working every day?
We will try and provide work for you every day (Monday to Friday), but there may be situations where this is not possible, for example, heavy rain may hold up picking or the crops may not have ripened enough.
I have a National Insurance number, does that make me eligible for work?
A National Insurance number is your own personal account number and ensures that your National Insurance contributions are recorded, allowing you to build up your entitlement to certain state benefits, such as a pension. A National Insurance number does not have any affect on your employability and you may still be subject to immigration rules (please note that you do not need to have a number before starting work).
Will I have to pay National Insurance contributions, even if I do not have a number?
Yes, you will have to pay National Insurance contributions, by law.
Will I have to pay tax?
Yes, you will have to pay tax, unless you are a student and have completed a P38s form on arrival. If, however, you do pay tax and your income is below the personal allowance (£6475 for 2010/2011) you may be able to reclaim this tax at the end of the financial year.
Do you have accommodation for couples?
No, we do not provide separate accommodation for couples - all the accommodation on the farm is provided in portacabins, with six beds in each room.
Do I have to buy my own food and where do I buy it from?
Yes, you will need to buy your own food and there is a supermarket located about 15 minutes walk from the farm.
